During the Indian Independence Movement, Pauri Garhwal played an important role. The region was home to many freedom fighters who fought against the British colonial rule.  After India’s independence in 1947, Pauri Garhwal became part of the newly formed state of Uttar Pradesh. However, in 2000, the state of Uttarakhand was formed and Pauri Garhwal became one of its districts.
